A new encounter with Linux

Dear Sir or Maddam; I,m a long term user of win OS. Recently I try to change to Linux and believe me I read 2 books on the subject, My new distro mandriva(last edit,)was install.I use a generic Nvidia ddr at confguration. During boot it opens in console mode. Despite using startx command I can not figure out how to go in VGA display and download a drive for my graphic card EVGA GeForce 6600 PCIe 256MB DDR w/VGA/DVI/TV Out.I need lots of help and detail explanation. I have no expertise in this matter but I'm working at it.
Thank you GALLo

Hi

Well something is probably wrong with your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Could you post the contents of the file here? If you have sendmail installed the easiest way to get that file to yourself would be to type the following command.

mail -s "xorg.conf" gallo@gmail.com < /etc/X11/xorg.conf

That will email yourself the file. Of course replace my fake email address with yours. As for the drivers, it works a bit differently than Windows. The stock "nv" driver or vga driver should be loaded in the kernel or as a module so there isn't a need to install a driver like Windows. You can get the binary driver from Nvidia but that's another topic. First we need to get you into a GUI.
