New Features and Programs

  • Linux kernel 2.6.27 (Hardy uses 2.6.24)
    • Flash memory file system, and an option to install Ubuntu on a USB
      thumb drive.
    • Faster.
    • Lots of fixes (including the infamous Intel gigabyte ethernet
      problem).

  • Gimp 2.6 — mainly changes to the interface, with a lot of
    work under the hood.
  • OpenOffice 3.0. (It was released 10/13 and ought to be
    in the Intrepid final release.)
    • Reads MS Office 2007 files.
    • Multiple page display.
    • Zoom slider.
    • Can read and edit some PDF files.
  • Gnome 2.24 is standard in Ubuntu.
    • brasero — finally a decent Gnome CD/DVD burner.
    • Tabs in the file browser (nautilus).
  • KDE 4.1 is standard in Kubuntu.
    • Major learning curve — different look and feel.
    • New file manager — dolphin, replacing Konqueror.
    • New document viewer — okular, replacing KPDF, KDVI, KGhostview.
  • X/Org 7.4 (includes failsafe mode).
  • Encrypted Private Directory for each user.
  • Guest Session — "sandbox" for temporary users.
  • Boot menu has "Last Good Boot" option.

  • kparted — partitioning and resizing tool.
  • modification of grub boot menu.
