This is a Web systems admin position - not Web design, Web applications programming, help desk, or back room systems admin. Typical activities include configuring a load balancer, figuring out why someone's Java app is crashing the app server, teaching some people how to use a wiki, finding security holes in a Web application, debugging why a new HTML page is really slow, responding to a text from a search crawler that's gotten gummed up, reviewing a new Java application design for scalability issues, conducting a vendor evaluation of content delivery networks, and coding up a great new tool to automate your team's work (yes, in the same day).
Opportunities this position will afford you:
• A chance to excel and room to innovate
• Hands on experience with a wide variety of Web technologies in an enterprise environment
• Provide 24x7 support for the site (there is an oncall rotation)
• Network with a wide variety of other smart and motivated professionals
• Troubleshoot blindingly complex technical issues across all levels of the technology stack
• Responsibility to improve things that could be better
Qualifications:
• BBA, MIS or BS in MIS, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, related field, or equivalent experience
• 2+ years UNIX systems administration (Red Hat Linux or Solaris preferred)
• 1+ year Web server administration (Apache or other), J2EE application server experience strongly preferred (OracleAS, Weblogic, Websphere, or JBoss/Tomcat)
• Intimate knowledge of HTTP/HTTPS protocols, and strong familiarity with other Internet protocols
• Knowledge of other web concepts such as FTP, firewalls, caching, DNS, and proxies
• Scripting ability in Perl, bash, PHP, Python, and/or something else civilized
Any or all of the following are a big plus:
• Experience with content management systems (e.g. Vignette v7), search (e.g.FAST ESP, Lucene), or SOA
• Demonstrated passion for the Web, such as active involvement in industry groups or a boss blog
• Understanding of TCP/IP networking, routing, and directory services (LDAP/AD)
• Experience with clustering and load-balancing applications
• Some light experience with database concepts - Oracle, Postgres, mySQL experience
• Java programming
• Web page design (CSS, HTML, JavaScript)
• However keep in mind this is not a Java programming position or a Web page creation/design position; it is a systems administration position
